Monrovia Community Adult School was the first public school in Los Angeles County to open a classroom after the County shutdown all schools due to COVID-19. Currently, Los Angeles County Health Office regulations allow MCAS to train critical infrastructure/essential workers. However, only the portion of the training where students learn hands-on skills may be in person. All other portions of training programs must be online.

During this pandemic, MCAS is prepared to deliver training programs. MCAS is still able to offer quality medical programs with excellent certification pass rates and job attainment results at much lower costs than private colleges. 90% of our students receive financial aid with 78% qualifying for training at no cost.

All CTE students must take an entrance exam following the MCAS One Student per Classroom testing protocols. Following are the medical programs MCAS is offering during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Clinical
Next classes will begin in August of 2021

The MCAS Pre-Certification Nursing Assistant program prepares students for the State Nurse Assistant Certification Exam and for employment as a CNA.

During this pandemic, the theory portion is delivered online using an online Learning Management System for curriculum and Zoom for direct instruction. Theory instruction includes HIPPA, emergency procedures, accurate measure and records, and proper nutrition, among others. This hands-on clinical portion will be completed on campus, not in a skilled nursing facility; the waiver for allowing the school to serve as the training location has been approved by the California Department of Public Health. The hands-on clinical portion teaches skills for patient care including bathing, grooming, specimen collection, CPR and others skills.

Successful students pass Certified Nurse Assistants exam, get employed and climb the first rung up the professional nursing ladder on the way to becoming a Registered Nurse

In addition to passing the pre-registration assessment, potential students must pass criminal background screening to be eligible for this class.

Clinical Medical Assisting Back Office Term 1
Next classes will begin in August of 2021

The MCAS Medical Assisting is a 25 week program that introduces students to a career in medical services, prepares students for and places them in a medical office externship, and helps students find employment.

The Medical Assisting program is divided into a 10 week Front Office and 12 week Back Office segments. The balance of 3 weeks is to allow students the time to complete the externship, which begins before they complete classroom instruction. During this pandemic the Front Office portion is delivered virtually using an online Learning Management System for curriculum and Zoom for direct instruction. Much of the Back Office portion of the program is delivered in person on the MCAS campus following all safety protocols as students learn hands-on skills for the back office of a medical office.

Students learn about the medical front office by demonstrating professional, effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; knowing and applying legal responsibilities and medical ethics; using medical terminology, abbreviations, and symbols; following OSHA regulations; and performing patient data collection and management. Students also extensively learn about the medical back office: injection procedures, sterilization, diagnostic testing, EKG, medications, examinations, and minor surgery prep, among other skills.

Pharmacy Technician Term 1
Next classes will begin in August of 2021

The MCAS Pharmacy Technician Program prepares students to earn a state Pharmacy Technician license, pass the national Pharmacy Certification Exam and get successful employment at a pharmacy. This is all provided at a fraction of the cost charged by private colleges. Our faculty has years of pharmaceutical experience and contacts to help MCAS students to get employed.

Students learn basic pharmacology, pharmacy calculations, deciphering and filling medication orders, reconstitution of medications, medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, and pharmacy operations among other critical topics.

The MCAS Pharmacy Technician has always been a program delivered in a hybrid manner including both online and in person instruction. During this pandemic almost the entire class is delivered online. Only the portions of the program that require students to learn hands-on lab skills will be delivered on campus following all safety protocols. Under non-pandemic circumstances, students would complete an internship at a pharmacy. During this pandemic the school assists student efforts to start employment as a Pharmacy Clerk during the program. Once the student completes the program and earns the Pharmacy Technician state license, the expectation is that the student would then move into a position as a Pharmacy Technician with the pharmacy.
